Best Ergonomic Office Chair

The office chair is perhaps the most important piece of equipment in an office. It’s where you’ll spend 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, for as long as you’re working. I might even venture to say that it’s more important than the computer you use, or the desk you sit at. Studies have shown that the simple act of sitting can cause back pain, herniated disks, spinal misalignment, carpal tunnel, etc. Sitting has even been said to be worse than smoking!

Ok, while that’s a little dramatic, it is important to find a a good quality, ergonomic office chair. It might be hard to shell out the cash on an office chair, especially when that old hand-me-down from your uncle works just fine, but your health, and your back, will thank you.

So what makes an office chair “ergonomic”? Well, it’s a combination of proper lumbar support, breathable mesh seats, curved backrests, and height and tilt adjustments. While this ergonomic combination of features might not fix all your problems, it’s a good place to start.

Herman Miller Embody Chair

Herman Miller Embody

This is the chair to end all chairs. Herman Miller, a legend in the office chair community, is known for beautifully designed, well-crafted pieces of art. They’ll cost you a pretty penny, but can you really put a price on your well-being? This chair will last you forever, you’ll pass it on to your grandkids, and they’ll thank you for the perfect blend of ergonomic support and exquisite craftsmanship.

Called the most ergonomically advanced chair in the world, more than 30 physicians and experts were consulted in the design. The exposed exoskeleton back, engineered to mimic the human spine, moves with you throughout the day, providing constant support. Pretty much everything on this chair is adjustable - tilt, armrests, seat depth, helping you find the perfect position. It also comes with an amazing 12 year, 3 shift warranty. This chair will improve focus, combat fatigue and even improves heart health, how amazing is that??

Herman Miller Sayl Chair

Alright, if the Embody chair is too expensive for your budget, you can still enjoy the benefits of Herman Miller - and the prestige of owning a chair from the brand - with this “affordable” option. Sure, it’s still more expensive than most office chairs, but when you realize that it’s only a third of the price of the Embody, you’ll realize why this is what Herman Miller calls “affordable”. Due to it’s price, it is lacking a lot of features you’ll find in other Herman Miller chairs, however, it will probably still be the most comfortable chair you’ve ever sat on

Leaders Executive Office Chair

Okay, back to reality. I know it’s tough to settle for anything other than Herman Miller after this, but most people just don’t have the budget for it. This chair though is still uniquely designed and ergonomically impressive, while still being affordable. Like the Embody, pretty much everything is adjustable.

However, unlike the Embody, it features a headrest, if you’re the kind of person who goes for that kind of thing. The design supports from neck to lower back, and actually improves your posture, as it forces you to sit upright.

Ikea Markus

This is a beautiful, affordable chair, with a high back, perfect for tall and small humans alike. As with everything Ikea, the design is simple. However, once you sit in it, you’ll have a hard time going back to a regular office chair. The back is designed to follow the shape of your spine, and there’s also a headrest, although it’s not adjustable. This is probably one of the best affordable ergonomic chairs on the market. You’d be hard pressed to find something better at this price point

Serta Back In Motion Office Chair

Serta Back In Motion Chair

This is definitely a cush option if you’re into extra padding. Known for their mattresses, Serta has applied similar technology to their chairs to make an affordable chair, with a luxury feel. No mesh back, which is a bit of a minus, but this chair makes up for it with deep, ergonomically designed pillows, layered throughout the back and seat. Everything about this chair has been designed to support your back and spine, and so it’s a good option, especially if you like the extra padding.

Viva Office Mesh high back Chair

VIVA office chair

Another affordable option, this is one of the few affordable office chairs that work for people taller than six feet. It also has a weight capacity of 250lbs, tilt tension control, a synchro tilt mechanism, back angle adjustment and more. It also has a mesh seat and back, which prevents heat build up. It might be the most impressive office chair on this list, but it’s a solid choice, at an affordable price.

Flash Furniture Task Chair

Flash Furniture mid back basic chair

Simple and affordable, this chair offers a curved back, waterfall seat design, and flip up arms. It also has a mesh back, which is a must. It might not have many bells and whistles, but it will get you where you need to go, with minimal back strain - at least until you can afford a higher end office chair.

Office Chair Alternatives

kneeling chair

If none of these do it for you, maybe it’s time to consider other ergonomic options

A kneeling chair is a chair without a backrest, and instead allows you to sit with your knees resting on a pad. This puts your thighs at a 60-70 degree angle, allowing your shins to support your body weight. It’s a bit weird to see, and even weirder to do, but it’s meant to reduce lower back pain and promote proper posture.

Another option is a standing desk. Supposedly, using a standing desk at work decreases fatigue, increases well-being and energy, and maintains productivity. However, this all means nothing if you’re using it wrong. Standing desks are only useful in certain jobs, and for certain people, so think carefully before you consider this option.
